Chiefs’ Yellow Card Confusion Cleared Up

SAFA Head of Referees Abdul Ebrahim has cleared the air on the yellow card received by Zitha Kwinika against Mamelodi Sundowns, saying it was not a case of mistaken identity.

Downs were awarded a penalty in the 16th minute of the game after Siyabonga Ngezana had fouled Peter Shalulile inside the box.

However, Ngezana’s teammate did receive a yellow card, with many wondering whether it was a mistake by match official Victor Gomez or whether Kwinika was booked for something he said.

Ebrahim now explained that, while Ngezana’s challenge was not a bookable offence, Kwinika was booked for dissent.

“The referee made a decision and the head coach assumed that the referee made a mistake,” he told iDiski Times.

“But no, the caution was correct. The challenge from Ngezana was not a reckless challenge, there no incident that warranted a yellow card.

“The yellow card was purely by dissent.”

When asked to clarify whether the card was indeed Kwinika, Ebrahim confirmed: “Yes, that’s correct.”

However, despite the confusion around the yellow card, with even Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane stating the wrong player was booked, Ebrahim insisted he was happy with the performance of the match officials on the day.

“I think they did very well. Victor Gomez, he is used to that kind of pressure,” he added.

“I was watching the game and he was calm and relaxed. He understood perfectly the situation. 

“It was the first big game that the fans were coming to, all the tickets were sold out. So it just tell you the magnitude of the interest from the spectators as well.

“I’m very happy with the performance of the match officials.”
